Canada is a popular hub for a wide range of sports activities. In fact, over 100 sports are being played in this nation. Here are top sports that Canadian enjoy watching:

Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is the first sport that comes to mind when you think of Canada. The sport is played at all levels; you would see children as young as three and two taking it to the ice with a stick, a puck, and protective gear.

In fact, the first hockey match held on March 3, 1875, was hosted by  Canada. 

Although the sport is played all year round, it’s officially considered a winter sport. During this time, ice hockey games are watched at its peak and sports betting becomes all the rage in the country. 

Soccer

Though soccer was not very popular when it started out in Canada, the sports have picked up its pace over the years. Considering the global football fever, it was only evident that the country got ahead of the game. Canada hosted its first soccer game in October 1859 in Toronto. 

With soccer emerging as a prominent international sport, Canada’s soccer teams have also begun to play more sports within and outside the country.  Canada also has its men’s national team that competes in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. 

Cricket

Cricket is a sport that has recently gained traction in the country. Although sports remain common in countries like South Africa, Indian, Australia, etc., it’s slowly becoming more common in other parts of the world as well. According to records, it’s not actually a new thing in Canada.

Cricket was played in the country as early as the 1700s. The sports witnessed a resurgence of popularity in the year 2018 when Canada hosted the Twenty20 league. 

Baseball 

Since 1838, baseball has been a popular sport in the country, but back in the nineteenth century, the sports were known as ‘townball.’

Presently, the country owns only one major-league baseball team: The Toronto Blue Jays. In 1977, the team played its first season. Canada shows a long history with baseball that goes back to two centuries. 

Lacrosse

Another sport that is in the roots of Canada is Lacrosse. The sport was reckoned as the de facto national sports of the country between 1959 and 1994. It is believed that the first lacrosse game was held back in the indigenous period. 

Before the game became Lacrosse, it was called multiple games, including baggataway and tewaarathon. The game actually gained momentum back in the 1800s and has been a part of the sports portfolio ever since then. 

Golf 

This popular sport started back in the 15th century, and the first game was hosted in Scotland. During the emigration of native Scots to Canada, they brought golf with them.

First November 1873 witnessed the first gold club’s inauguration in Canadian and was named the Montreal Golf Club. 

Canada hosts a plethora of sporting events all year round. Moreover, among the many sports, the sports mentioned above are among the most loved and enjoyed by Canadians.
